I recently had the delight of meeting world renowned toy designers Amanda Visell and Michelle Valigura! They commissioned our class with a toy design project of our own, and this abomination is the result! He is kinda cute tho.

Inspirations: Yoann Lossel

So I’ve been addicted to a lot of things in my life (carbonated soft drinks, deep fried starches, Flight of the Conchords). But having recently gotten into painting with metallics, I can tell you it’s one hell of an addiction. You use it once and you suddenly wanna put that shit on everything (illustrations, paintings, toast).

I’m absolutely in love with the gold adorned graphite illustrations of French artist Yoann Lossel. Not only am I a huge advocate of the beauty and artistic legitimacy of plain pencil drawings, but Lossel goes as far as to employ actual gold leaf painstakingly applied with exacto knife. He also uses real pressed flowers in his work, and often his signature is painted directly on top of one of these delicate embellishments. Blow my mind.

This one sat under my couch for like three months. Figured I should finish it:) It’s not perfect (extrapolating the anatomy of a horse from above was a little hinky) and I might come back to the idea again in a little while. However, the beloved Quixote is possibly one of the most venerated subjects in art history, portrayed by artists from Dore to Picasso to Dali, and I tried at least to reimagine a different view of the famous story. It’s kind of crazy that something as poignantly, enduringly funny to people of today could have been written like fifteen minutes after the birth of the print press.

Inspirations: Nomi Chi

I’m entering that surreal stage of my illustration career where the folks, I should say the other teenaged kids with bootlegged copies of photoshop pumping out all that grassroots digital art, that for years I watched on Deviant Art, I am actually starting to cross paths with. Like a fucking decade ago I favorited this sweet ass painting of these two tigers on DevArt, and to my total surprise happened to see that very same painting on the wall at Emily Carr University. I was like, “the fuck? I love this painting.”

I started hearing whipsers everywhere I went of this killer talented girl name Nomi. Apparently she was serious shit, and gonna kill us all (artistically). I realized after subsequent espionage that she was that same artist from Deviant all those years before. And when our circles did finally collide, I am abashed to say that upon meeting her I pulled a massive fangirl. Like an “Oh Em Gee, you’re effing Nomi Chi! I am such a big fan.” And I say I’m abashed because she’s the chillest lady ever.

We became friends during a digital illustration class, when, despite the brutality of our mutual overtaxed schedules, we managed to find time during breaks to become pee buddies, meeting up to make the walk to the gals room and for the occasional mid class nip of Fireball.

Her half shaved head is worn to put any hipster to shame. You just wanna drink beers with this girl. She works harder than almost any artist I know. She’s one of the most bitchin bitches out there. And she’s disgustingly, nauseatingly, putresently talented.

Bon voyage to Nomi as she sets off for a (well deserved) exchange in the UK!! Come back to us girl! And keep rocking so fucking hard.

I took a children’s book illustration class this fall with the mind bogglingly talented Calef Brown! These illustrations were part of a little dummy book I built inspired by the beautiful west coast Vancouver Island town of Tofino.

For anyone whose never been there, it’s kind of a magical place…. surfers I’ve met around the planet know the name of this tiny town and vow to make pilgrimage there someday for the fearsome winter storm surfing. Tofino sits atop an enromous stretch of Pacific beach, is surrounded by misty ancient old forests, witness to Humpback and Orca migrations, and is the kind of place you see people bike past you with surf boards ten times a day.

These are just a few of the illustrations and most need a little tweaking, but I think they turned out pretty cute:)

So this is a piece I did for my family’s Christmas present!

We have, among our clutch of idiosyncratic holiday traditions, a yearly ritual of spending Boxing day in our PJ’s doing nothing but gorging on seasonal baking and completing a jig saw puzzle.

It occurred to me this year to create our OWN puzzle, of myself and my family, putting up lights and building snowmen.

*This is actually the second time in my life I’ve commissioned a custom puzzle. The first was one I created years and years ago of a friend naked at the beach at 4am, for their birthday present, just because.

So I’m dabbling in the sexy, fast paced world of merchandizing!! I’m a timid young virgin in this field, so please be gentle, don’t everybody go ordering too fast now;)
